Conditions - Post Surgery
Helping to prevent oedemas, inflammation and muscle wastage in the convalescing dog, Massage Therapy improves nutrients to muscles whilst stimulating the lymphatic system to dispose of metabolic waste and is truly a therapy that all dogs having undergone surgery should have during their period of recovery.
As massage heavily influences the circulation system it is and ideal therapy for the convalescing dog as the blood and lymph is moved around the body, mimicking exercise, to ensure that metabolic waste and toxins (including anesthetic) may be flushed from the body to encourage a speedier return to health. A proper massage can be likened to a walk without them having to leave the house.
Stimulating the nervous system via the use of varied strokes and techniques, natural endorphins are released which ease both stress and anxiety levels. Think how you feel after you have been ill or perhaps you have had an operation yourself. That feeling of lethargy, aching, stiffness, deep down feeling of depression of sadness or simply not being able to seem to return to normal activity because your body aches all the time. Your dog is exactly the same. Deep tissue work when suitable is directed at overcompensating muscles which are unable to function normally while at the same time connective tissue restrictions, adhesions and scarring may be prevented from building up which if left restrict the dogs mobility and recovery. By providing the necessary nutrients for tissue and bone repair associated with hard tissue subluxation, recovery time may be substantially reduced. Superficial massage around affected afreas can help to soothe nerve endings and interrupt pain receptors.
Simply put, massage should be an absolute must for any dog recovering from surgery. They recover quicker and better than dogs who don`t receive massage and because the whole body is worked upon areas of pain referral and compensation can be resolved so they don`t instigate new problems
Suggested time frame to begin massage treatment is within 2 to 3 weeks after surgery.
